How our insurance client gained valuable data insights into their business

We have been working with our insurance client for over three years. During this time we have guided them through the process of modernising their data systems, achieving goals which run through the company.

The Situation

Our client was aware their data systems were not up to standard for their future needs. When we started talking they were unable to gain insights into their data. Their data systems worked independently, so they could not pull insights from the vast amount of data they stored.

The Challenge

The insurance company had an excellent team in place, with great knowledge of the business processes. However, it was impossible to link the data and processes between systems in the UK, joining up worldwide systems was not even being considered. This was beginning to cause issues as they could not report on their current situation or forecast accurately.

We started by developing a data strategy, incorporating technologies to be used, data sources to be consolidated, insights which were required. We had to develop a system which met all their day to day requirements but was flexible enough to meet unplanned requests.

The Solution

We built a SQL Server Data warehouse to hold their disparate data sources. This fed a cube which was modelled optimally for reporting. Finally, Power BI was set up with dashboards and reports to present visualisations including trending over periods of times, snapshots of data and the ability to forecast. During our development a successful data cleaning exercise was undertaken, resulting in accurate data which added real value.

The Results

This project kept growing! The first phase was delivered successfully and was immediately followed by a second phase to incorporate additional systems into the Data warehouse. The business fully embraced Power BI, the self-service functionality, freeing IT from producing ad-hoc reports and allowing users to query the data as they required. The business worked to new processes which enabled daily analysis of what had been achieved and where more effort was required.

This project continues to grow, the business is still incorporating and building new data sources. The data analytics grows continuously adding more value each month to the company.
